Hold the cut
Pins or wonder clips hold a seam while you stitch. Clips are kinder on vinyl and laminates that pin holes would mark. Pins are the usual hold on quilting cotton. A seam ripper is the undo, not a cutting tool. Pack it after the shears, not instead of them.

Machine later
A compact mechanical machine is enough for a first garment seam. A serger is an edge finish after the seam exists. A computerized model is a later comparison, not this set. Do not start with a heavy-duty listing because the product photo showed thick denim you have not cut.
