The FTC requires generic fiber names on most textile products. Manufactured fibers must use those names, not a trademark standing alone. Fibers at 5 percent or more by weight are named in order of predominance. Read that tag before you pick thread. A burn test belongs on a waste yarn, last, in air you can leave. Sewing.org is blunt about that order. Do not burn a finished hem to settle an argument.
The care tag is a different label. FTC Clothes Captioning: a minimum wash line is a method of washing and a method of drying. It does not name the fiber. Use both tags when they exist. Florida humidity still belongs on the humidity guide, not as a reason to skip the fiber line.
Shears, then a mat
Cut the cloth you already named. Paper scissors on yardage chew the edge. A self-healing mat is the table under a rotary cutter, not a substitute for shears on a garment cut. If the job is a garment, start with shears. If the job is a quilt strip, the rotary and the mat are the pair. Do not buy a machine because the shears drawer is empty.

Thread weight
All-purpose polyester holds a garment seam. Quilting thread has two jobs of its own. YLI treats 50 wt as piecing, flat, not bulky. 40 wt is show quilting. Weight and fiber decide whether the seam disappears. Do not buy 40 wt because the spool looks pretty on the peg. Buy 50 wt if the seam should hide. Buy all-purpose if the garment will be washed hard.

A machine is later
Computerized versus mechanical is a real split. It is not the first door. Stitch memory and a wide table belong when you already cut cloth and already picked thread. A heavier mechanical frame belongs when the cloth is denim or canvas and you want a dial. The listings and the stitch counts live on the machines comparison. Do not start there if the fiber tag is still unread.
